WE NEED the death penalty Crime in the Caribbean: In the shadow of the gallows

Rasta Belt-Trinidad W03S62DCrime in the Caribbean: In the shadow of the gallows | The Economist: "“WE NEED the death penalty…that is the word of God,” said Benjamin Agard, a Pentecostal pastor, in his funeral sermon last month for Cecil Carrington, a retired police officer shot dead by bandits at the small hotel he owned on Trinidad’s windswept east coast. The funeral came a fortnight after Trinidad and Tobago’s prime minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, promised to remove legal obstacles to hanging, offering a parliamentary debate on February 18th.

Her stance is popular across the English-speaking Caribbean, where murder rates have soared since the 1990s. Her country suffered 472 killings last year—close to 5% of all deaths. In 1999 there were just 93. Almost everyone can name a friend or relative who has met a violent end. Last year’s murder rate, of 36 per 100,000 people, was seven times that in the United States and 30 times that of Britain. But it trailed Jamaica (53), Belize (42) and tiny St Kitts-Nevis (40)."

'He's got a gun,' victim warned cousin in shooting outside club

Yeury Colon died trying to warn his cousin about a gunman, according to testimony Thursday in the trial of the alleged shooter.

Johnny Got His GunColon was running across the parking lot of Club 570 in Hazleton on Aug. 1, 2009, yelling 'He's got a gun. He's got a gun.' His cousin, Rafael Calderon Brito, was approaching Johan Pujols when Pujols flicked the gun and fired and Colon dropped, Brito testified in Luzerne County court.

Brito said he grabbed Pujols' hand, twisted him to the ground and heard the gun fire again. Figuring the gun was empty, Brito said he released Pujols, who said he didn't want any trouble as he walked away.

Earlier in Thursday's testimony, a city police detective and gang expert testified that a man wounded by a gunshot in the incident was not a gang member.

Luis Perez-Rodriguez didn't belong to a gang but was a poser, Hazleton Detective Christopher Orozco said after being shown photos of Perez-Rodriguez flashing hand signs.

Orozco said the signs were from three different gangs; a true gang member wouldn't flash signs for other gangs.

Perez-Rodriguez was wounded outside the Hazleton club when Colon was shot to death. Pujols is charged with shooting them both. His attorney has argued that there was a gang conspiracy to kill or injure Pujols."

The operation, connected with members of the Doctors Path Flames, a faction of the “Bloods” gang, allegedly distributed $20,000 worth of cocaine in the area each week and printed thousands of $20 counterfeit bills, which were sold for 10 cents on the dollar.

Search warrants were executed at 10 locations late last month where members of the East End Drug Task Force recovered half a kilo of coke, $2,000 in counterfeit bills, three illegal handguns — one of which was used in two shootings in Riverhead — and gear that suggested members were planning to impersonate police officers, Mr. Spota said.

“This shows you right here in Riverhead…we have bad, bad people,” he said."
