Police nab 40 suspected gangsters in islandwide raid - Channel NewsAsia

Police nab 40 suspected gangsters in islandwide raid - Channel NewsAsia: "Police have picked up 40 suspected gangsters in an islandwide blitz.

Speaking at a media briefing on Friday, Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam said the islandwide sweep will continue over the next few weeks.

He added that the police will not hesitate to use the Criminal Law (Temporary Provisions) Act if necessary.

The Act allows suspected criminals to be detained without trial and is used largely in cases relating to secret societies, drug trafficking and loan-sharking.

Mr Shanmugam said the Act is a powerful tool for the police, adding that 'along with great power, comes great responsibility'.

Recent gang-related incidents have caused public concern."
